Online reviews have become the lifeblood and the executioner of many businesses because they have nowhere to hide. If you are running a bad business people will rate you accordingly and if you are doing a good job, word will spread too. Yet when it comes to the job market should we trust these reviews?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Websites like glassdoor have grown in importance for understanding the true culture of a company. While they are useful you should use them with a bit of perspective. Ex and current employees can rate a company on a website and often have ulterior motives. If a company lets an employee go they will likely be unhappy and looking for a place to vent. <strong>People are very bad at turning their criticism on themselves so when they lose a job they often blame the company they worked for. <\/strong>Watch out for ex-employees who are just trying to get even. Similarly, when you read a positive review just be careful that is not someone who is just trying to make HR happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ensure that a company has enough reviews before you place too much weight on them. Ensure as well that the review is talking about the branch you are thinking of working in<\/strong>. Many companies have offices all over the world and how a company is being run in America makes no difference to you if you are sitting in the office in New Zealand.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Once you are happy with these facts take note of the points raised during reviews and consider basing some of your interview questions on them<\/strong>. If people highlight the lack of career growth in the business, ask about career path planning. If people say there is no culture, ask how people in the office socialize.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Most importantly keep an open mind. Use online reviews as a guide but don\u2019t let it turn you off or on a company completely.
